Institute of Transportation Engineering was originally from the Road Surveying and Design Department of Xi'an Highway College，which was established in 1956. In 1982, it added a transportation engineering Department, one of the earliest departments related to traffic and transportation in China. With the development of this institute, the right to grant a master's degree was obtained in 1990, and the doctoral degree and post-doctoral research station were granted in 1998. Then, the transportation planning and management discipline of Chang'an University was approved as a national key discipline in 2010. Numerous teaching and research work have been conducted on the area of transportation planning and management, highway survey and design. Discipline of transportation engineering in Chang’an University is the key construction discipline of “Double First-rate Project” of Ministry of Education. It is also the key construction discipline at the national level of“211 Project”, and “985 Engineering Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform”. The discipline construction ranks the top among universities which open the same discipline. In terms of research work, combining closely the newest research trends of transportation industry such as highway transportation, urban transportation and rail transit, the institute has completed dozens of scientific research projects such as national key research and development plan projects, national science and technology support plan projects, and national natural science fund projects, especially in the urban rail transit planning and construction in Xi'an. In addition to that, the performance of this Institute in highway network planning is also particularly prominent, as well as the theoretical research on highway road design and some advance technologies.
