The transportation engineering discipline conducts research on regional or urban transportation systems consisting of various modes of transportation such as roads, railways, waterways, aviation and pipelines. The direct research object is the components of the transportation system and interactions.

The transportation engineering discipline at Chang'an University was established in the early days of New China, In 1979 and 1990, Chang'an University obtained the right to grant master's degree and doctoral degree. In 1996, a post-doctoral research station was established . In 2007, the transportation engineering became a national key discipline. In June 2011, this discipline was selected as the 985 subject advantage platform. In 2017, the transportation engineering dicipline entered the ranks of the national first-class discipline construction.

The transportation engineering discipline in Chang'an University has the most complete system in the domestic road and transportation field, oriented towards the planning, design, construction and management of modern integrated transportation system. Under transportation engineering  discipline, there are four secondary disciplines:
